Losing Weight Alone

Hard and Harder

I've been on a diet for a while working to get down to my ideal weight. Great idea, right. Losing weight is hard, as many people have found, losing weight alone is even harder. I know I'm not the only person in the world trying to lose weight. What I mean by losing weight alone is that I'm trying to lose weight, but I've got a wife and three kids. I'm the only one trying to lose a large amount of weight.

The Family

My wife is already thin but constantly on a diet. But, she is not doing the same type of diet as me. She is trying to maintain her weight and occasionally she'll work extra hard to lose the few extra pounds she gains.

Of course the kids are not trying to lose weight, although I worry about my oldest son being more active on the computer than outside. But, my other 2 sons love to go out and play constantly. They are starting to get active in sports and they have no problem burning off any excess calories that they take in. So I'm left to shoulder my own burden of trying to lose all that weight that I have put on over the years.

Multiple Meals

One of the challenges that I face trying to lose weight on my own is that I try to make everyone in the family happy about the meals they get. I'd make one meal for the kids and one meal for my wife and I. You guessed it, I'm the cook in my house. If I had to do it over I would have stressed the importance of the adult meal to my kids from the time they ate solid food. But, thankfully, after many tense moments and threats of long hours at the dinner table staring at food they said would make them sick if they ate it, the kids have started to come around. The have started to embrace the adult meal. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that those chicken nuggets just don't fill them up anymore and they need something that provides them with the energy to play.

Veggies

Since they have begun to eat "adult food" losing weight alone is not as challenging as it would be with them eating kid food. I can fix a somewhat healthy meal for everyone instead of the adult meal and the kids meal. I include a lot of fruit which they like very much and I try to mix in the vegetables. Admittedly though, there aren't too many veggies they're into yet. It surely helps to be able to fix 1 main course instead of 2. To help you out try to fix the foods that are healthy and that both of you like.

Exercise Time Another challenge I face is trying to find time to exercise. Finding time to exercise when you work at a desk much of the day, then cook dinner, then have some down time before going to bed is the challenge. I've found in my attempt at losing weight alone combining down time and exercise is necessary. That means in order to keep myself into the exercise routine I need to make it fun for myself, but also be able to be there to break up the fights amongst three kids. So, if you're in that situation losing weight alone involves working out with the kids and involving them. Play sports with your kids and keep active. What could be more fun than hanging out with your family and having fun while being active and burning off calories.

Make it a great experience When you're dieting and losing weight alone you should try to make it the best experience possible. Just like everything else make it enjoyable and it will enrich your life. Losing weight alone doesn't have to be something you dread. Make the best of it.
