Risks Of High Protein Diets

What are the risks of high protein diets ?

Some of the most popular diets for quick weight-loss are high protein diets with low carbohydrates.

These diets are specific, as the largest number of calories come from protein- rich foods in protein such as red meat , fish , eggs , poultry and cheeses , while carbohydrate-rich foods are avoided or consumed in small measure .

Although the American Heart Association and the National Association for the Education of cholesterol do not recommend implementing this diets, they are still one of the most popular, probably because of the rapid weight loss.

Some of the most popular new high protein diets are : the Atkins diet , the South Beach diet and the Dukan diet .

How does it work

The goal of most new high protein diets is to induce a state of "positive ketosis " which results in intense fat burning as a source of energy. For this reason, this diet is also called a ketogenic diet .

More specifically, the ketogenic diet is a special diet that is based on the state of ketosis, in which the body enters after a certain time eating, mostly proteins and fats. When the body enters into a state of ketosis, instead of sugar primary source of energy becomes fat .

This occurs when the body gets a certain period of very small amounts of carbohydrates. Once you start a diet, your body goes through several changes. After about 48 hours of starting this diet, the body starts to use ketones in order to burn more efficiently the energy stored in fat cells.

In other words, the primary source of energy are not carbohydrates ( glucose), but fats and fatty acids. Therefore, during ketosis it is not a problem to eat foods with higher amounts of fat.

In ketogenic diet it is very important to eat small amounts of carbohydrates. Mostly your diet will consits of cheese, eggs, meat and fish .

This kind of diet, however, can have adverse health effects. Many individuals who kept diet excessively rich in animal protein, often have elevated cholesterol, osteoporosis or high triglycerides.

Risks of high protein diet

The most common problems and complications associated with high-protein diet are :

renal failure

Consuming too much protein burden on the kidneys, which can afect the health of people who already have problems with kidneys.

high cholesterol

It is well -known association of high protein diets (eating red meat) with high cholesterol .

osteoporosis and kidney stones

High protein diet promotes increased calcium excretion through the urine ( more than in those with a balanced diet ), which over a long period increases the risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones .

carcinoma

High-protein diet does not cause cancer, but it limits intake of fruits , vegetables , grains , and consequently of vitamins, minerals , enzymes , fiber and antioxidants , which are the biggest fighters against various forms of cancer.

Experts in nutrition and weight loss considered that those diets have more risks than benefits, and that their attraction consists mainly of promises of quick weight loss. High dietary theories are not scientifically validated .

In most cases people will prefer to choose a fast diet than change their eating habits and lifestyle. In this way, after losing, weight may return, because of returning to old eating habits that cause excessive body weight, which is contrary to the recommendations on healthy weight loss. Losing weight should result in a decrease in the percentage of body fat, and the goal of reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and cancer, not just weight loss due to look good.
