Reasons Your Metabolic Rate May Be Low

Simple put, your metabolic rate is the rate you burn off the energy from foods and liquids you consumed. There are reasons why your metabolic rate may be low no matter how hard you try. Everyone's metabolic rate varies based on their body and genetics. Your height, weight, age, normal daily activity level, muscle mass. Courtesy of my genetics I have a normal metabolic lever which can be irrating when my husband has an abnormal fast rate. There are some things that without being corrected lower our metabolisms.

To me one of the most fixable is your daily activity level. The more you are still during the day the slower your metabolism will be. People who are naturally affected by this are people with sedentary jobs, such as call center agents, receptionist, operators, typist, and radio djs just to name a few. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 20% of private industry jobs involve some form of physical activity. If your job keeps you sitting most of the time, there are simple things you can do to give your metabolism a boost during your work day.

Your body temp and external temp can also play a key role in your metabolic rate. The average temp for a healthy, resting adult is 98.6 F or 37 C. When you body temp dips lower then your body uses energy to warm your body up and when you temp spikes higher your body uses energy to cool your body off. Both of these actions cause a rise in your metabolism. You can use the external temp to make sure body temp lower or higher to get your body to use energy to get it back to normal.

I personally have heard people say they have hypothyroidism and that is the reason they are unable to lose weight. Now I'm not saying to use this as an excuse, but it is a real condition. If you have a low metabolic rate and can't figure out why, talking to your doctor could help. Another contributing factor, can be medications that you are currently taking. By talking to your doctor, you can figure out what is going on with your metabolism and steps that can be taken to raise it.

To me crash dieting is the worst for a lot of reasons. There are a lot of diets out there that have you consuming a very low amount of calories per day. Because of this a lot of time the weight you are losing is muscle mass instead of fat weight. Having a healthy muscle mass is needed to keep your metabolism burning all day. Some diets require you to eliminate certain foods groups, such as carbs, from your meals. All foods serve a basic function. Eating the right amount of healthy carbs, help protect your muscle mass.

Whether it is genetics, health concerns, your job, or diets there are things that can lower your metabolic rate. Once you figure out what is slowing yours down, you can figure out how to raise it back up.
