Lose Weight with Raspberry Ketone

The tiny little red berries consist of about 200 molecules that provide them with their distinct raspberry flavor. Out of them, just one molecule known as Raspberry Ketone was singled out by manufacturers a few decades ago for its smell. The berry flavored stuff that we generally use like candles, soaps and candies- they all contain Raspberry Ketones in them. This sweet smelling raspberry ketone was in the news again recently but this time for its ability to make one lose weight.

Where is it found?

Raspberry ketones can be found in blackberries, cranberries and red raspberries which are mostly found in North Africa, Europe and Central Asia. These berries have essential nutrients like Vitamins A, C and E along with beta-carotene. However, the amount of ketones present in these raspberries can only be found in traces so the berry-flavored foods are actually a result of labs. Scientist found that raspberry ketone had a molecular structure similar to capsaicin which is responsible for the heat of chili peppers. What is to be noted here is that capsaicin is known to prevent weight gain. In accordance with these facts, scientist conducted research and studies on mice and human tissue to see the effectiveness of raspberry ketones in losing weight.

Does raspberry ketone help in shedding weight?

The use of raspberry ketone for any sort of health condition on humans hasn't really seen much reliable research. We still need more high-quality research for the same, says Catherine Ulbricht, senior pharmacist at Massachusetts General Hospital who also reviews evidence on herbs and supplements. We only have a handful of studies on the subject of raspberry ketones for weight loss and none of them were performed on humans. However, the studies which were conducted on mice have shown a potential weight-loss effect. A study conducted on mice in 2005 included feeding mice with a high-fat diet but with the usage of raspberry ketone weight gain around belly and liver was prevented.

Another study has shown that the usage of raspberry ketone assist in breaking down fat cells and lipids (fat molecules). A paper published in 2010 in journal Planta Medica also found that raspberry ketones spurred fat cells in the body in order to secret more amount of a protein called adiponectin. This type of protein is found in lower levels in people who are obese or have type 2 diabetes.

Is raspberry ketone safe?

In 1960s The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized raspberry ketones as "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS) food additive. However this status was only given assuming that a person will only consume less that 2 milligrams of raspberry ketone in a day. But many weight loss supplements consist far more quantity as assumed. But raspberry ketones are known to lower blood sugar levels along with decreasing the risk of bleeding. People with diabetes should be monitored closely.
