Diet Programs

Over the years there have been a number of different diet programs. Who among us could forget the day Oprah rolled out a wheelbarrow full of all the fat she had lost on the Optifast diet? It wasn't long before she gained back all the weight and more. Most of us know fad diets can get the weight off quickly, but they don't work so well when it comes to keeping the weight off for good.

I can't begin to tell you how many different diets I have been on in my lifetime. Even though I have managed to get my weight to stabilize at a level I can live with, I still go on diets any time I find myself five pounds or more above my goal weight. For years I would lose weight by depriving myself of the foods I loved, only to binge on them after a few "good" days. Now I allow myself to eat what I want in moderation.

The Low Carb Lifestyle

One of the most popular diet programs in recent years had been the Atkins diet. So many people jumped on board the craze that it became a national trend. Many fast food restaurants and other popular casual dining facilities begin to list carbohydrate counts on their menus, and they even created alternatives to traditional hamburger buns. Many people saw quick weight loss by getting their bodies into a state called ketosis. This state helps people burn stored fat, and leads to rapid weight loss.

If you are thinking about going on a low carb diet, or any other diet, it's a good idea to consult with your physician first. Your doctor will tell you that decreasing your weight by just 10% can reduce your risk for high blood pressure, heart attacks, and other weight related conditions. It's important to lose the weight at a safe rate, which is one to three pounds per week for most people.
