Weight Loss Supplements Info

Weight loss supplements are categorized according to their action, or how they work. Which one should be used depends upon the particular needs of the individual. In general, the market today offers five categories of diet supplements: thermogenic fat burners, carb blockers, fat blockers, hormonal regulators, and appetite suppressants. Some formulas contain ingredients that work in more than one category.

Weight Loss Supplements and Their Actions

Fat burners are a popular choice for weight loss amongst athletes and exercise enthusiasts. Thermogenic fat burners stimulate the central nervous system, raising body temperature to burn fat more quickly. They are more effective when used over a short period of time. Carb blockers contain an ingredient derived from the northern white kidney bean, which has proven effective in preventing the breakdown of carbohydrates into glucose. Carbs are excreted before they can enter the bloodstream.

Fat blockers claim to block fat from being absorbed into the intestines. They do this by attracting fat molecules like a magnet, preventing it from becoming metabolized. It is then excreted from the body. Hormonal regulators target the thyroid, which is the main regulator of metabolism. Compounds called gugglesterones increase thyroid activity, and therefore increase the rate at which fat is burned. Appetite suppressants affect the hunger control centers of the brain. They, like many weight loss supplements, come in stimulant and non-stimulant forms. Fiber can also be used as an appetite suppressant, as it makes a person feel full.

The weight loss supplements in these five categories all act in different ways to achieve the same results. What may be appropriate for one person may not be right for another. Factors to consider include extent of obesity, physical and mental health, and known reactions and allergies. Consultation with a doctor may be advisable for some weight loss patients.
