Zero in on calories

Before you go cutting calories, calculate your caloric profile (see "Men Lose a Pound a Week!" under Related Article). This will tell you how many calories you really need based on your weight, age, and level of physical activity. Armed with that information, start keeping track of your "energy in." Close track. "Most people grossly underestimate the number of calories they consume and overestimate the amount of expenditure," says Gay Riley, M.S., R.D., author of The Pocket Personal Trainer. "But the best way to change your eating habits is to know what they are." Skip the scrap paper. Instead, use your PDA to list everything you eat; you're never without it, and you can load it with calorie-counting software, such as NutriCounter ($29), that will supply you with a running calorie tally.

 

The Average Guy consumes 2,618 calories a day

 

In 1980, that number was 2,439. Of course, you'll have to adjust for inflation. Your own, that is.
