If you’re struggling to lose weight because running 10 kms a day or eating only salads is just not your thing, don’t give up yet! You will be surprised by how the activities leaner people do in their everyday life helps them maintain their svelte figure. That’s right, something as basic as fidgeting regularly throughout the day can help you get rid of unwanted fat! A study conducted by Dr James Levine, endocrinologist and nutritionist at Mayo Clinic, in 2002 found that routine and painless activities throughout the day like fidgeting can help obese people lose weight [1]. Dr Levine blamed a sedentary lifestyle behind rising rates of obesity.

In his study obese people were made to control their diet for 11 weeks throughout the year during which they had to wear sensors for the entire day. They were then told to sit less and be more fidgety during this time period. Following that, it was found that it became easier for them to knock off some of the extra pounds.  (Here’s an Ayurvedic diet plan to keep you fit and healthy)

Here’s how you can also lose weight by fidgeting, provided you don’t binge eat and maintain a healthy diet:

  • While you are talking on the phone, avoid sitting at one place. Instead, walk around your office or house throughout the conversation.
  • While you are watching TV or working on your computer, keep wriggling your ankles and toes at regular intervals. Tap your feet more often while sitting and don’t sit at one place for more than an hour. Again, remember to get up and walk around for a few minutes.
  • Don’t make your kids or household help run errands for you. Get up and turn off your lights and keep your own plates in the kitchen instead of asking someone else to do it. If someone is at the door, make it a point to get up and answer the door.
  • Keep stretching your body every hour or so between work or even while at home. Here are 7 reasons to stretch everyday. Yes, doing such small things regularly will help you achieve a leaner body!
