Low Calorie Cocktails

Cocktails were known as drinks for the sophisticated and elegant, which weren't as common back in the day as hard drinks. A drink on the rocks was a common phrase used among men and women, using just a tonic in some cases to cut down on the acidity of the alcohol. A lot of people enjoy a round of cocktails that are pleasing to the senses, immediately engaging sight, smell and taste with its rainbow-esque colors, fruity smells and flavors. Cocktails make for great drinks when you want to kick back during the weekend with friends, or when settling down for a nightcap after a hard day's work. Worrying about how much you might be piling on when it comes to the calories? These cocktail recipes will douse those concerns.

Low-calorie Cocktail Recipes

These low-calorie mixed drinks are simple mixes that can be made anywhere, anytime. The ingredients are a great coalesce of flavors, that will set your taste buds tingling. Be sure to show off your bartender skills to friends and family, and make the most of these easy to put together low-calorie cocktails.

Pomegranate Martini

Cocktail Ingredients
  • 1 cup of pomegranate arils
  • 1 sachet of sweetener
  • 1 shot glass of vodka (Grey Goose or Smirnoff will do)
How to Make It

First squeeze out all the juice from your arils, pouring the clear ruby liquid into the cocktail shaker. Then add to this your sweetener and vodka, giving it a good strong shake for about 10 seconds. Strain into a martini glass if you have one of these, and top it off with an olive on a toothpick. The pomegranate's mild sweetness is taken up a notch by the sweetener, making it a refreshing drink on a Sunday afternoon.

Strawberry and Lemon Zest Cocktail

Cocktail Ingredients
  • 4 strawberries (cut off the top)
  • One curly strand of lemon zest
  • 1 and a half shot glasses of white rum (coconut flavored rum, either from Malibu or Bacardi)
  • Sprig of mint
How to Make it

Crush the strawberries until you're left with a smooth consistent juice, strain this using a sieve to get rid of the seeds and then pour it down the cocktail shaker. Then add to this your coconut flavored rum and seal off the shaker before you mix it up. Open it and then add a sprig of mint, finely chopped and give it another good shake to infuse the flavor last. Pour into a tall glass, and top your cocktail off with a curly lemon zest strand, that you can carefully remove from a lemon using a potato peeler. Cooling, fruity and flavorful - this coconut-y strawberry cocktail eases you down after a strenuous day.

Kiwi Cocktail with Mint and Lemon Juice

Cocktail Ingredients
  • 1 sprig of mint
  • 1 shot of glass of lemon juice
  • 1 shot glass of white rum
  • 1 sachet of sweetener
  • 1 medium-sized kiwi
How to Make It

Crush the kiwi until it reduces down to juicy mush - strain thoroughly before pouring this into a cocktail strainer. Add in your one shot glass of lemon and rum, including your sweetener. Seal it off and give it a violent shake for about 10 seconds, before pouring it into a tall glass and garnishing with a basil leaf; give the leaf a good smack between your palms to release its trapped flavor. The bittersweet kiwi is hit with lemon to bring out its sour side, but also striking a balance with sweetness, to make it less tangy. Add the crushed ice last to give it a good icy finish.

Experiment with other ways to include fruit and herbs to get the hang of different flavors and form an understanding on how they merge to complement each other; soon you'll be a cocktail king (or queen). To the makers of cocktails!
