QUESTION: Dear Sarah,

I have sometimes a high heart beat rate and after visiting spcilist and overall check the specialist mentioned that this is not a heart disease but because of your stress at work and your food taht you are eacting and no sports? please suggest to me what I ned to eat that reducces my heart beat rate, realx me and also reducing my wieght I am 38 years old and my heigh is 174 and my weight 81 Kgs?
note: I have read articles that says Ineed to take some food that contain magnesium and potassium? thanks

ANSWER: Hi Jwameer!

Making an effort to increase phyical activity (such as using stairs) and to participate in sports will be your best option for lowering your heart rate.  The heart is a muscle that must work harder (by beating faster) when it is not being exercised enough.  Physical activity can also release hormones in your brain that will help you feel less stressed.  The increased activity should also help you lose weight.

Diet may also help with both your fast heart rate and stress.  You will want to stay away from caffeine, which increases heart rate; drinks and foods high in caffeine are coffee, tea, energy drinks, guarana, and chocolate.  Potassium may help if you eat a lot of sodium, especially from salt added to food during processing, meal preparation, or at the table; sodium and potassium work with each other so if you have too much of one you need more of the other to balance.  Of course, you could also eat less salt!  Many fruits and vegetables contain potassium; bananas, tomatoes, and potatoes are especially high in potassium.  Magnesium can help reduce your heart rate because it contributes to muscle relaxation; leafy greens (spinach), dried apricots, nuts, and seeds are good sources of magnesium.  Drinking plenty of water will also help because dehydration can increase your heart rate.

Foods that may help with stress include oranges (the vitamin C helps regulate hormone levels and increase immunity, which is decreased during times of stress), nuts (B vitamins increase immunity), turkey (tryptophan is needed for seratonin, which is the hormone that helps you feel relaxed), and fatty fish such as salmon/tuna/cod and olive oil (the omega-3 fatty acids help regulate hormone levels).  Crunchy foods, such as apples and celery, have also been found to help reduce stress levels.  Foods to be avoided during stress are anything containing caffeine (which increases heart rate), processed sugars such as table sugar/soda/candy (sugar can irritability and depression when the temporary "sugar high" falls), and alcohol (which limits the liver's ability to remove natural toxins produced by the body during stress).  Even though tobacco is not a food, it should also be avoided because it increases heart rate.

If diet and exercise do not help lower your heart rate, there are medications your doctor can prescribe.  Of course, natural methods should always be attempted first.

Just trying to eat healthier should decrease your calories and help you lose weight, as will increasing your physical activity.

QUESTION: I have also a problem with my stomach and colon, I had symptoms of ulcer, spasm: so that also restrict me from eating all types of food, for instance last night I ate grilled fillet salmon but because it is may be fatty it affect my colon so I had gasses which also increase the HBR?

Answer
Any time your body is under stress it could cause your heart rate to increase.  When most people think of stress, they think of mental stress; however, whenever your body is fighting an illness or part of your physical system is off (such as an ulcer or eating a food disagreeable to your colon) your body also experiences stress.  

Luckily, a lot of the items you should stay away from because of an increased heart rate should also be avoided if you have an ulcer, things such as tea, coffee, chocolate, alcohol and tobacco.  Citrus and tomatoes should be avoided with an ulcer so you should consume vitamin C from other sources.  As far as the fat in salmon, you may try eating smaller portions of fish and/or making sure other foods in the meal are low in fat; eating the fat with whole grain bread or rice should also help.  (Often when someone has problems digesting fat it can be traced back to gallbladder problems, which you could ask your doctor about.)  Fiber has been shown to be beneficial for ulcers, but may not be beneficial for you if you also have colon problems; you should speak with your doctor about your goal for fiber intake.  Eating a yogurt every day has shown to help with ulcers in the past; studies on new yogurts containing ImmunoglobulinY show the new yogurt may be even more effective.  With both an ulcer and colon problems, you should try to eat 5-6 small meals (300-400 calories) per day instead of two or three large meals; skipping meals can aggravate symptoms (and increase stress).  Sitting upright instead of laying down or immediately walking around for a few minutes after eating can also help control symptoms.
