a question about iron

Question
I haven't been eating that great for the past week and a half, because i'm really busy with school. I cut my lip and the blood looked orangy hued. And I'm really tired now, like I can sleep for a good 8 hours and after 2-3 hours of doing everyday things, i'm exhausted. So my question is can you become anemic after not consuming any iron for a week? What foods contain a lot of iron in them? Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi Nikki,

No, you cannot become anemic after not consuming iron for a week and a half. It takes months to years of eating an iron-deficient diet to develop iron deficiency anemia, because your body maintains a store of iron. If you don't eat enough iron to meet your body's needs, this store is gradually used up and you will eventually develop iron deficiency anemia. To make sure you are getting enough iron, eat several iron-rich foods every day, including beef, pork, chicken, legumes (e.g. lentils, baked beans, black beans, chickpeas),vegetarian "meats" (e.g. veggie burgers or deli slices), dried fruits (e.g. raisins, apricots), nuts and seeds, or blackstrap molasses.

Hope this helps!

Karen
