Fasting ,does it work?

Question
Yes I have a question I really hope you can help me with.I was bulimic for about 7 years or so,I quit and about 6 months later I went from a size 4-5 to now about an 8.As any person who has suffered from Bulimia,to us this is a nightmare! I was eating good foods,im not a meat eater but I love vegetables, salads, rice, ect.
Even with that I was gaining. So recently I had read on line that fasting is very good for your body,to cleanse it out and also to lose weight.Well I started 2 weeks ago,my first week I only lost 4 pounds ,i went from 145 to 141.Today which is one week later I weighed again to find I was still at 141.All i have been drinking is juice & water.I was very frustrated! And still am,can i have advice what to do? Or am I doing something wrong?I did finally eat a salad today I thought what the hell,i've not lost anything, but im not sure if I should go back again to the fasting and try again.Any advice? Thanks so much!

Answer
Donna~ Fasting just to lose weight is not a good idea. Some people, however, do fast for spiritual reasons. I know how you feel though. I too have suffered from bulimia and recently recovered... now having gained 15 lbs. I know it's frustrating, but you can find other ways to lose weight. I would suggest trying a raw foods diet: meaning you would mainly be eating fresh fruits and veggies, with limited amounts of nuts and seeds. While fasting does cleanse your body and gets rids of potential toxins, it can also wreak havoc on the body and bring about many problems. But, I also want to answer your question about whether you may be doing something wrong in your attempts to lose weight by fasting. The water and juice that you are drinking may be the problem. Since your body is not getting any calories from food, it is most likely retaining the fluid and the sugar contents of the juices to keep up your body's daily functioning. Most people that fast for spiritual reasons may also take diuretics and laxatives to aid in the process of getting rid of toxins. Again... this can lead to severe medical complications such as electrolyte imbalances that can bring on heart problems. Good luck wiht your weight loss attempts, but please do not get so obsessed as to fall back into the deadly cycle of binging and purging. Gaining a little weight will do you less harm than the bulimia. ~Leigh-Anne
