Carb crazy?????

Hello Kimberly,  what has brought on this low carb frenzy?  I know people who are obsessed with counting carbs.  What's good for us anymore?

Answer
Not sure what actually brought on the carb craze but diets like the Atkins diet is a good guess.  People do NOT need to be obsessed with counting carbs.  What people should be doing is making sure the carbs they are eating are coming from healthy sources.  Sugar is carbs so eating foods with less sugar is helpful.  Also, when choosing breads going with whole wheat or whole grain as opposed to white is healthy.  Choosing brown rice instead of white rice and whole grain pasta instead of white pasta can make a big difference in nutritional intake.  When choosing other carb foods such as cereals go with ones that are less sugar and more fiber.  Eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as dried beans are healthy carbs.  The idea is to choose healthier carbs AND to watch portion sizes. People don't need to eliminate carbs from their diets they just need to choose healthier ones and watch how much they eat per day.  It is very easy to eat too many carbs but that doesn't mean you need to cut them out you just need to eat them in moderation!!
