Greetings. I'm a 20 year old male who has been overweight his entire life. From the earliest time I can remember I have always been overweight. I was the fat kid that everyone made fun of in elementary school, the last one picked for the team in Gym class in Junior High, and at the bottom of every gal's list of desired prom dates in highschool.

I have a problem. This affects my self esteem and I don't want to live the rest of my life fat and miserable.

I've never tried to lose the weight because I saw my mother try repeatedly and ultimately fail. At one point she only ate 500 calories a day, and lost 200 lbs. Unfortunately she couldn't keep with it and gained it all right back. She convinced me that starvation is the only real way to lose weight. I guess I never saw it as being worth it.

I want to start a weight loss program of some type. I signed up for a gym membership and used the treadmill every day, but ultimately wasn't able to keep up with it due to some family circumstances that needed to be taken care of. In three months I took off about 15 pounds. Not exactly impressive but for the first time I was below 300.

I guess I want to be pointed in the direction of the "right way" to do this. There is so much conficting information about weight loss out there. So many fad diets, and so many "miracle products" that I don't know where to begin.

Hi Mathew,

You have been and are being smart about looking for answers. Nice try in the gym - bear in mind they are selling MEMBERSHIPS, if you never use the joint, fine with them.

What your mother did did wonders to lower her metabolism - long story - see http://www.premiumfuel.com where you can get a sense of the dif between Real Food vs. Flavored Packing Material. When you get what you need, you don't overeat. WHen you don't you keep on eating.

For the most benefit for minimal effort, try to spend 30 minutes a day breathing hard, walking, stairs, skating, AND doing it in 3 separate 10 minute bursts is better than 30 straight - but get it any way you can. ONe day a week do resistance training, but not the conventional way. If you wear out each of 6 muscle groups, one at a time, it takes 2-3 minutes/group for a total of 20-30 minutes (all at once) you can get the shape AND METABOLISM of what used to take 5-10 hours a week.
