Maintaining Weight in Old Age...

Question
Hi, I know that this isn't specifically in your  field, however I am writing an article about this subject for a magazine journalism assignment, and I was wondering if you had any advice on how a senior citizen can maintain, or even lose, weight through nutrition choices as they are aging and losing muscle mass? Any help would be greatly appriciated! Thank you!

Answer
Hello Katie!

Thank you for your nutrition question I would be happy to help with your assignment. The best ways for a senior citizen to lose or maintain a healthy weight are staying active as possible and eating the right foods.
Many of today's older generation living alone in most cases, are often forced to make compromises such as making poor food choices.  When you combine poor food choices with lack of activity it leads to weight gain.  The best way for a senior citizen to avoid this is eating a diet high in "whole" grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts.  The elderly should also avoid a diet high in saturated fat and sugar.
Besides diet, physical activity is part of a healthy lifestyle at any age. It can help reduce and control weight by burning calories.  A study published in the Dec. 28, 1994, Journal of the American Medical Association found that intensive strength training can help preserve bone density and improve muscle mass, strength and balance in postmenopausal women. Also, scientists looking into the benefits of exercise for older people agree that regular exercise can improve the functioning of the heart and lungs, increase strength and flexibility, and contribute to a feeling of well-being. Hope this has helped.
