grapefruit diet

Question
what is the specific action caused by the intake of grapefruit juice.

Answer
I am assuming that you are talking about the claims of weight loss and the intake of grapefruit.  There are no studies to substantiate the myth that grapefruit increases your body's ability to burn calories because of its acidity.
The "grapefruit diet" is another fad diet and though it might promote short-term weight loss (because the "diet" is so low in caloires), the long-term effectiveness is a different story. The bottom-line for lasting and healthful weight loss is a healthy and well balanced diet, reduced calorie intake and regular physical activity.  Diets that promote weight loss due to ONE food should put up a red flag for you!!
Beware that there are many prescription medications that should NOT be taken with grapefruit!!  Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
