Question
Hello Reverend.

I need some advice. I am overweight and would like to start implementing some excercise and better diet into my life. I am 25 years old. I am 5'5"  and i weigh about 245. I need to lose weight. I know my BMI is high and would like to know what excercies would be good for me to start off with. If it's something that causes a major change in my habits, I usually fail. I'm being honest here. How can i start this off slowly and then graduate to a more advanced regiment of excercise and diet?  I need help. I'm tired of being fat. But food sure does taste good. Very comforting.

Thanks for your time.

I have the highest of respect for you! I also know EXACTLY how you feel and what you're facing. I spent my entire life dieting & failing and & getting bigger and bigger until diagnosed borderline morbidly obese. Yes, it's going to take some time and mostly, patience, but YES - you can do this!  And the best news? You can still enjoy ANY food you like! Give NOTHING up! I think that's why most of us keep failing. We aren't good at eliminating things or self-denial.

I've got an eating plan (and how I did it myself and how I STILL do it) on my site. No sales. No promotions. No signing in or signing up or any gimmicks whatsoever.  All just me doing whatever I can 'cause I've been there!

Now, the exercise thing is tricky with those of us who start out large enough to have trouble doing most things - so a $10 pedometer is a good beginning.  The skinny experts who must be marathoners say aim for 10,000 steps a day! Uhh, that's like 4 miles.  Nice thought, but not likely a reality. If you can put a consistent 2,000-2,500 steps on it (about a mile a day) to begin with, GREAT!!!!
Here's another "trick" to kick up calorie burning: VOLUNTEER for something you've been talking about (we ALL talk about getting involved, but we don't all do it). Sign up and show up.  Ideally you should be doing something very, very different from what you're used to.  Something that will be a learning experience and introduce you to new people, new situations and new movements. If you spend your days at a desk or counter, volunteer to clean up the environment, do something outside at a nature preserve, hands on at an animal shelter, school, care facility, etc..

My site also has a Volunteer Match that finds needs in your specific area of the country! Right down to your hometown!

Now - once you start - you let me know.  I'll be here (or through my site) for ongoing support, no matter what.

By the way - trash your scale.  Enjoy it.  Jump on it, throw it, smash it, kick it, whatever you need to do. You won't be trusting that liar anymore!  Seriously.  That's the #1 BAD habit to break.  OK?
