After identifying that a child...

Question
After identifying that a child is obese, how do we help her to lose the weight in a healthy way, and not make her feel like it is punishment?

Answer
Dear Allison, most younger children who are obese have learned a lot of their eating habits from their parents, be it good or bad habits. So first as a parent, you have to follow a healthy eating and daily exercise program yourself. Second don't buy foods that trigger excessive eating like starchy carbohydrates, sugar drinks, cookies, candy, fast foods, etc. Leave foods like that for parties and holidays. Eating is for survival not for pure pleasure, When kids understand that, they choose foods that benefit their health instead of their tastebuds. If the child is older, then the child has to seek help and be motivated for change. You can't make an older child change habits by force, or they will get upset and think that you don't love them. If they seek help, then help them with a healthy eating program and daily walking for at least 30 minutes. Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
