Feels better,weighs more!

Question
Rev.,
I am male,46.I havent gotten on the scale in three months, since I decided to really cut my calories and exercise more.My weight was 220 back then.
I look better in the mirror, and feel better too.My pants are a bit looser.But...
The scale reads 230 lbs today! I have heard that muscle weighs more than fat,but I had expected to lose weight not gain!
My workouts were running the treadmill three times a week and a couple sessions of weight lifting-squats,bench press, deadlifts. Is it possible I could have put on that much muscle?

Answer
Well, yes, muscle weighs considerably more than fat and your workout seems intense. Still, you're right, you probably should not be seeing an increase.
The most promising part is that your clothes are looser, which happens with fat loss (and muscle tone). Otherwise I'd suspect fluid retention or something else going on.

With higher muscle mass, it takes more energy (calories) to maintain it - meaning your metabolism goes UP, even when you're at rest. Re-evaluate your calorie intake and maybe drop it just a bit (depending on what it is now, your height). One ideal way to do this without really counting anything is to have your usual meals, in usual amounts and leave 1/4 on the plate.
After a couple weeks of this, maybe another month, you should see the scale go down (don't increase your workouts, but maintain them).

Finally, the BEST part of your question was the statement that you don't use the scale too often! Good job! The really important part IS how your clothes fit, how you feel and that you're eating healthy, reasonable amounts while exercising. The scale is meaningless in light of this.
