Holiday Snacks

Question
Mr Rapitis,
My family loves to eat (in fact most of them are obese.) I took control this year and lost 30 lbs and learned how to eat.  My sister (who was much heavier) has lost 65 and is still losing. My mom was diagnosed with diabetes (type 2) just a day ago... and well our Christmas family reunion is coming up!

You see, in my family, everyone cooks a dessert and we have an entire dining room table full of desserts for our weekend Christmas reunion.  But with my sister and I taking control of our weight and our mother being diagnosed with diabetes... I really want to do something different than chocolate and pure sugar!

Do you have any suggestions of a snack that can be set out (and left out without refrigeration) that people would enjoy?  I'm open to any ideas.. but am having trouble finding many.  I am allergic to artificial sweeteners (so the sugar-free cookies and that stuff is out!)

If this is too involved just let me know, but I do appreciate the advice of an expert dietician! Thanks in advance.

God bless,
Deborah

Answer
Hello Deborah!

Thank you for your nutrition question.  The following recipe would be perfect for your holiday party. Hummus is a middle eastern dip made from chick peas. It is nutritious and tastey! Also very low in sugar. You dip this with whole wheat pita bread triangles.

     HUMMUS Recipe
1  can mashed chickpeas
2  tablespoons tahini
1  tablespoon lemon salt or fresh squeezed lemons (according to taste)
salt
crushed garlic (optional)

Combine all ingredients and mix well.
Add a little parsley and olive oil for presentation.
Serve with fried flat bread.
