whole grain breads

Question
While on my last trip to the grocery store I was looking for light while grain bread. I found the whole grain bread, but it wasn't light. I did find light 7 grain bread. Is there a difference between whole and 7 grain bread? Do you know of a brand of light whole grain that I can find at the supermarket? Thanks!

Answer
Hello Lynne!

Thank you for your nutrition question. Whole wheat means that they don't refine then enrich the wheat before it gets made into the bread. I.e., you retain the natural nutrients in the grain.

Whole grain is like whole wheat, but not *necessarily* limited to the wheat (there are other grains in the bread. This tends to make it more gritty, but more flavorful too). Sometimes, however, they put whole grain and it does just mean whole wheat.

Multi-grain, is whole grain with an assurance of multiple sources of whole food. These tend to absorb better and have a variety of nutrients not present in just whole wheat.
