extra calories from junk food...

Question
extra calories from junk food can go to unhealthy body fat, but if you have all the nutrients going into your system, other than weight gain what's the problem with eating junk food?
lets take ice cream, or pizza, since i know the nutrient values differ.  now lets rid of the nutrient values...

can it cause internal damages, muscles damages etc...or are those effect solely due to malnourishment?

thus junk food isnt bad (except, of course, for weight gain problems and sleepiness sometimes) unless it is used in a diet to substitute for other necessary nutrients?
thanks

Answer
Hello Jeff!

Thank you for your nutrition question. Junk food can be very bad if eaten too often.  Not only does junk food cause weight gain but it can also lead to heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.  Many junk foods such as candy bars and chips contain artificially made fats called trans fatty acids which have been shown to cause heart disease.  Other harmful ingredients in junk foods are preservatives which can cause cancer if eaten in excessive amounts.  Hope this helps.
