Emotional eating/binge eating

Question
Friday 10th March 06  uk

Hi, I am Shirley and am 48 years old. I have had a weight problem ever since I had my two kids. I have dieted and lost the weight but have always put it back on again. I know that I am eating for emotional reasons and that I frequently eat (the wrong stuff) when I am not even hungry.

I told my mum, the trouble is, when I go to the shops, supermarket etc and I see sweets, chocolate, cream cakes, ice cream, crisps etc, I am actually seeing a pain killer - something that will make me feel better inside. So I am using these bad foods as a sort of a drug to avoid feeling bad inside and to avoid dealing with negative emotions that have built up over the years. I cannot seen to stop myself using food as a drug. I know that I have lost weight before BUT I did not have on my mind then, what I have had in recent years.  How on earth do I stop emotional/binge eating? I am just about to tuck into cheesecake now and its not even 11am in the morning yet. This problem is really bad and my health must be going down hill.  How do I get out of this dreadful habit and eat properly?

Thanks for your help.
Shirley

Answer
Nearly 100% of all dieters will not only regain ALL the weight they've lost, but 20% more. The diet industry makes more than $40 BILLON per year, with growing profits while the population just gets larger.
 When will we learn?

You're very insightful in knowing your overeating is emotional, so how about getting whatever help necessary to tackle those monsters? There are often FREE support groups for overeaters that do just this.
In the meantime, when you're about to go over the edge and you know it, say "NO" right out loud and get away ! I used to walk right out the door - leaving my temptation where it was - but I'd force myself to walk, to do something, for 10 minutes. THEN, if I wanted that temptation, I'd give myself a portion, put the rest away (really, AWAY) and then I'd enjoy the portion as if it were the last bit (pretending there was no more anywhere). Not only did this work, but the walk provided some exercise!
Then I began volunteering for a nature preserve - and this kept me away from temptations for hours a week, PLUS gave me something else to focus on. How about giving some time at your children's school? They'd love it, most schools need it and it will keep you feeling fullfilled without food.

Check my site for a clearer outline of what to eat and how to tackle this once and for all, WITHOUT dieting and without products! Grocery stores aren't bad places and there really are very few 'bad foods', just 'bad' amounts!

You can have your cheesecake and be healthy TOO!
