Question
Hello,
I am 30 yrs old, male and just recovering from a serious auto accident.  I was fat before the wreck, but more so after a summer and winter of eating and no activity.  I am currently 5'10", and weigh about 215, give or take depending on the time of day.  My ideal goal is to make it down to 175.
For about 2 weeks I've been doing the following exercises daily: walking app a mile, riding an exercise bike for a mile, 2 sets of situps (total of 20), 2 sets of pushups (total of 10), and 2 sets of jumping jacks (total of 20).  I've been staying away from high fat foods, and fast foods, and I stopped eating late at night period. (which was my main downfall originally)
I only drink water and juices with no food coloring in them, app 3 L a day combined.
I'm looking for tips on a proper diet, and any other exercises I need to be doing to lose the weight, I have no timetable on when I want it off, I just want it off, and have no restrictions from my accident other than heavy lifting.
Thanks for any and all info!

Answer
Art,
Sounds like you are on the right track. To help with your food intake, you can check out www.mypyramid.gov.  I would stick more to water than juices, which add extra calories.  You are better off getting your fruit intake from whole fruits!  AS far as exercise, my expertise is in nutrition but just keep in mind that you want to follow an exercise routine you can stick with so don't overdo it!  If you do too much you can burn yourself out!  As you begin to become comfortable with this level of exercise you will want to increase it to constantly challenge yourself.
Just remember that it is not only about losing weight but living a healthier lifestyle.  Also, once you lose weight you need to work at maintaining it so changes you make need to be permanent and something temporary just to lose weight!
Good luck,
Kim Tessmer, RD LD
