Question
Hello,

I am 18 years old and I have just devised a diet plan for myself, including exercise, giving myself about 10 weeks to lose 15lbs. I have several questions for you:

1.  Is this a rational goal?
2.  What do I do after I lose the weight? How do I maintain it without losing more weight?

Answer
Dear Assma,
You could lose 15 pounds in 10 weeks provided you need to lose 15 pounds. If you are close to a normal weight, then it is harder to lose that last 10 pounds. So yes it is a rational goal. After you lose the weight you have to add enough calories to maintain your new weight. It will be less calories then you need now, but there is no set number only averages. It's trial and error. If you lose more weight, add more calories. If you start gaining weight drop some calories. Keep track of everything you eat and measure the calories by reading labels. On average one pound equals 3500 calories. Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
