hip fracture recovery

Question
My mom is 65 years old has ostoporosis and just fractured her hip in a fall. On Thursday 4/20 she had a partial hip replacement and is recovering.

She is a lifelong smoker, has high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I suspect she has COPD but has never been hospitalized before.

She refuses to take Foasamax because she once had severe side effects from Lipitor and feels that all medication will cause her stress. Of course a hip fracture is a severe consequence but I sitll don't think she'll take the Fosamax.

She's about 5'2" and 160# recently losing (intentioanlly) 25# over the course fo several months.
What would you recommend for supplementation in terms of vitamin and minerals and what would you recommend for her diet while she is recovering from this surgery?

Thanks, Beth

Answer
Hello Beth!

Thank you for your nutrition question.  I would suggest Juice Plus which is a whole food nutrition supplement made from 17 different fruits and vegetables.  Because it is made from whole foods her body should absorb it better then a regular multivitamin.  Therefore, it would be perfect for her since she is recovering from surgery.  Many of my patients who are recovering from surgery have noticed faster recoveries using Juice Plus.  It is available on my website www.juiceblend.com or you can also give me a call at 734 578-6093.  Let me know if you have more questions.
