bingeing on fruit

Question
i get home from work and binge on fruit and veggies... usually around 1000 cals. my cals for the day usually end at 1200-1500 but i'm wanting to lose weight. is my evening fruit binge hurting or are they "negative" cals that don't really make a big difference?

Answer
I can't tell you how much I appreciate the opportunity to again address the 'negative calorie' myths constantly circulating the net. It seems once they die down, they're really just hiding somewhere, taking on some new spin and coming back bigger than ever.

The act of lifting a fork or piece of food to your mouth, burns some calories. The act of opening your mouth, burns calories. Chewing, swallowing - all burns calories.
Some food items have so few calories that it takes more energy to eat them than they provide, thus the 'negative calorie' calculation. You also spend more calories in the act of drinking water than water has - so it's a 'negative calorie' thing too.

Using the same calculations, you can reasonably deduct a certain amount of calories from ALL foods, including chocolate cake, ice cream sundaes and bowls of pasta, because you're going to burn some calories by eating them.
Whoever started the 'negative calorie' thing had far too much time on their hands and/or a new calculator (and probably a book to sell). The thing about negative calorie foods is that they are usually 'zero nutritional value' as well.

A calorie is a calorie. If you take in 3,500 calories LESS than you need to maintain your body, you will lose 1 lb.
If you take in 3,500 calories more than you need, you will GAIN 1 lb.

It also doesn't matter when you take those calories in. It doesn't matter when you exercise. The real scientific findings that are published in known medical journals (ie: JAMA) are that providing the proper building blocks of nutrition for your body (not dieting) will help your body best build muscle, process fat and maintain weight.

If you really want to lose - and you don't want to worry about it (or ever, ever diet again!), I've outlined exactly how it worked for me (after a lifetime of trying!)
Take a look and let me know if there's anything I can help you through.
