Diet for kidney stone prevention

Question
Hi Tanya,
Glad to meet you! I have a history of getting kidney stones and am trying to prevent another. I know I am suppose to drink lots of water--but anything else?
Like-
cranberry juice?
apple cider vinegar?
parsley juice?

I have tried all of these in the past. any advice?

Thanks,
Joe

Answer
Hi Joe,

Nice meeting you, too :)

Generally speaking, yes, you should drink a lot of water and make it sure you recycle it fast. For the recycling part, limit your sodium consumption and have diuresis-promoting (the production of urine by the kidney) foods like cucumbers, fresh parsley, watermelon, Uva ursi tea, etc.

To work out your diet specifics, your doctor has to do your stone analysis and a 24-hour urine specimen analysis to check serum calcium, uric acid, phosphate, potassium, chloride, bicarbonate, albumin, and creatinine, and pH. Only after that, it's possible to advise you on foods to avoid/include to your meal plan.

Hope it helps,
