bulking muscles

Question
Hi,
I'm trying to lose 20 pounds so i joined the gym and I do the stepmachine daily. I have been working on it for a month. I didn't lose weight but my muscles are building. How do I stop it. I want to be leaner, not bulkier. I want to lose weight, not gain. Should I cut out the protein in my diet? I eat 2000 calories a day. Should I lower the calories? What should I do?

Answer
Cutting the protein will not stop the muscle development as long as you maintain the workouts to the extent that you are.  Losing weight takes adding muscle (even if it's just muscle tone) in order to boost metabolism which will burn fats and carbs first.  The more muscle, the higher the metabolism and the more excess weight is burned (don't trust the scale for 'weight'; it will weigh 5 lbs of feathers just the same as it weighs 5 lbs of nuts 'n bolts)

To be less bulky, vary your workouts and/or cut the time, resistence and repetitions.
