how to get results from working out and eating

Question
i am a college freshman and im in the middle of my 2nd semester and my goal is to work out and eat right. my workout routine is mon, wed, and fri for an hour (about 10am-11am), spent time doing the elliptical for 20 min. and the rest towards the treadmill. but i want to focus more on my abs and hips and the machines are helping only for the butt and legs but not much for the abs. i have a lot of belly fat and i want to know what i can do and what kinds of ab workouts and when can i do them. i eat breakfast and i have class and i work out and then i go about doing my thing afterwards. what foods can i eat that doesnt have so much fat for my stomach to pop out? and what drinks as well with meals? i dont want to drink water with the meals. and is my time good for workouts? and even after from doing all this, my belly still looks fat and it "sticks out". im so confused!

Answer
Amy - the weight loss industry and products' market makes it all terribly complicated when it's really not.

There are a few things that dieters can be doing to sabotage themselves.
1st - not drinking enough will cause fluid build up as the body reacts to a perceived 'drought' or even famine (especially if your caloric intake is low as well).
2nd - exercising specific areas of the body can increase that area's size, whether by muscle development or directing fluid build up in the body's response to possible injury.

I don't blame you about the water (I can't stand it). My fluid choices are often non-fat soy products, tea/coffee or fruit juices with some sparkling (no calorie) water added.

Also, realize that if flat abs or 6-packs aren't genetically in your family, there's not a single thing you can do to get them. No matter what the gym/spa or equipment seller says.  It's something that involves location of your muscles to the skin (inside) and no exercises will change this.

Finally, the most successful overall best exercise is swimming. Just 15 minutes a couple times a week - and results are everywhere on your body within a month.
A trick is to use a child's playball (soccer ball size) and try to balance it underneath your body as you float on your tummy. It's not easy! Do this for just 5 minutes or so each time you get in the pool - and you'll notice a tighter stomach area inside of a couple weeks.
As time goes on you'll be able to balance the ball - and then it's time to start trying to move through the water while doing it. It's a real challenge!

The #2 best overall exercise is just plain walking! Briskly, not power or jogging, just a couple 10-15 minute walks a day while focusing on keeping abs and butt tight (without holding your breath!) and inside of a month you'll be feeling your clothes loosen up.
