Sugar Overload?

Thanks, Laura, this helps, but what if I just accidentally have eaten too much sugar ~ what's a quick antidote for this rare event?  I've noticed too that my heart races when I get the insulin rush.

Hi Laura

I have this thing where once in a while I eat too much sugar for breakfast (or not enough protein with my sugar).  About four hours after this I suddenly feel weak and light-headed.  My impulse is to eat something with a lot a protein and that usually makes the ill feeling go away in about 15-20 minutes.

I would like to know what is happening here.  Am I getting too much sugar, and is the reaction an oversupply of insulin i.e. is it insulin shock that I am feeling?  Am I doing the right thing to counteract the feeling, or should I be eating more sugar instead of more protein?  I just had a check-up and everything is fine.

Dear Pete. You are right in that you might be sensitive to the excess sugar. Your body, in response to the refined sugar, might be putting out quick insulin which then drops your blood sugar quickly and makes you feel sick. Some people actually pass out or vomit when the blood sugar level drop quickly. Refined sugar is not a needed food in the diet and should be removed from the diet if you are having these symptoms. There are other safer carbohydrate foods to eat like whole fruits (not juice), vegetables, whole grain bread, and whole grain rice, to name just a few. These foods contain fiber so the body breaks the sugar down slower avoiding the sugar high. Eating protein and fat with your sugar will slow the digestion down a little bit. Weakness and and that light-headed feeling might be symptoms of other problems, so get a check up. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com

Dear Pete, You have to sit and wait out those initial feelings. Sugar is the fastest food digested, so by the time you start feeling it, your not going to stop it. You can try to eat some cheese or peanut butter, to bring your sugar back up slowly, but it might take 10 minutes. Prevention is the key. If you had eaten the peanut butter (low sugar kind)or cheese with meal or snack in the first place, chances are you wouldn't have that reaction to counteract. Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
