the freshman curse

Question
i am just finishing out my freshman year and at 5'2 and 140 pounds i am very unhappy with my weight. i came in at about 133 but now i feel really depressed, one because i did exercise diligently on the elliptical for 1 hour for ten days and it didnt do much except make me really tired. is there anyway i can make simple changes to my life and lose weight without being totally exhausted?

Answer
Dear Deni, the freshman curse is caused by the freshman meal plans and endless late night sub runs and fast food meals. Really take a good look at what you are eating and try to compare it to what you used to eat when you were in HS. Chances are you are eating too many carbohydrate foods like bagels, crackers, bread, coffee with sugar in it, chips, fast food. Try to limit your calories to about 1500 per day and count your carbs found on the package. One hundred carb grams per day is a start. Continue with the elliptical if you can, but only do 15- 30 minutes per day to start. Just extra fast walking for 30 minutes per day will burn a few hundred extra calories and might be an easier exercise to stick too. Give it time, it took you months to gain that weight, now it will take months to lose that weight. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
