QUAKER OATS AND SATURATED FAT

Question
I watch what I eat and I am mindful about the intake of fat because of my weight. Does quaker oats contain fat?  How is it good for my weight?

Answer
Lillien,

Your title suggests that you are differentiating between saturated fat and other fat, which is good. The answer to your question depends on what kind of oatmeal you are talking about. If you are referring to 'old fashioned style' oatmeal, which is whole, steel cut oat it is different than instant style oatmeal. Instant oatmeal is further processed and has added flavors that my include saturated fats.

If you stick to the old-fashioned kind and just add a little brown sugar, honey or fruits for flavor, you are much better off.

Yes, oatmeal has some fat, but it is mostly poly- and mono-unsaturated fat. Everyone needs this kind of fat in their diet. It is good for your heart and your brain. If you don't get enough fat your body will make more and actually become more efficient at storing the little fat you get. That's why extremely low-fat diets are not good and can inhibit your weight loss efforts.

Don't worry about healthy fat from good sources like oatmeal, nuts and vegetables. Just avoid the foods high in saturated fats like sweets, cakes, and red meats.

Hope this helps.
