partially hydrogenated guar gum

Question
Hi there

I recently picked up a chewable fiber+calcium container (Walgreens brand) and saw that it contained "partially hydrogenated guar gum".  I was wondering if this ingredient is safe. I ask because of the bad reputation that "partially hydrogenated oils" have, but not sure if there is any connection other than the process of "partially hydrogenating".  thank you

Answer
Chris,

The process of partial hydrogenation will cause trans fats, which you should avoid. The nutrition industry is not well regulated and you need to be careful with any over the counter product. You really have to do your homework to find a company that has guaranteed safe products. I recommend a book called 'the comparative guide to nutritional supplements' by Lyle McWilliam.

Personally, I have associated myself with a nutrition company that has a proven scientific track record. You can check out their products at http://www.healthcoachgroup.com

I talk about this issue in detail in chapter 2 of my book, 'Brain Fitness'.

Hope this helps.
