calories in alcohol

Question
Hi, I've started a 900/1000 calorie diet for 3 weeks from a specialized doctor, and I know I can't drink any alcohol, but I have a big party soon, and I was just wondering how much calories do alcoholic drinks have. Just to guide me, for the future also. I'd like to know the calories that are in:
red wine
white wine
gin
vodka
whisky
rum
cider
champagne
cream liquors

Thanks, hopefully the one with less calories is the drink that I like!

Answer
Hello Carolina,
My own approach to weight loss is to never limit the calories, but to limit carbs daily to under 30 carbs, and to choose natural carbs over unnatural ones.

None of the drinks you listed is lowcarb.  I am also concerned because:
a) I feel you may be looking for an "out" on your "diet"
900 calories a day is no fun.  And, it gives you no guidance on choosing foods that will keep you feeling full (like meat, fish, olive oil, nuts, unsweetend yogurt).

b) you can find the calories for all the drinks you listed in a basic calorie count book.... which, for the reasons mentioned above, I am glad that you do not appear to possess.

The drink I would mix for my party would be made of:
1) unsweetened coconut cream (which is available in most Asian grocery stores... do not get the sweetened version).
2) cocoa powder
3) a natural low carb sweetener like SweetPerfection (disclaimer: I manage this company) www.lowcarbspecialties.com, or stevia (most people find this has a bad after taste.
The coconut cream will be very rich and filling...not many carbs at all, so you will not be able to drink alot of it.
Use ice and water to thin out the drink.

I would also have plenty of nuts on hand, so I could munch on foods that are rich, just like my guests.

I suspect that your "specialized doctor" will flip on this advice... that's fine... just ask him/her how much weight they have lost.   I have spent a lifetime living "weight loss," moving back from a high weight of 475 lbs.  I am now normally weight, and I can attribute absolutely no weight loss to any of the "specialized doctor"  treatments I followed... including low calorie eating, which actually caused me to gain weight when I finally stopped the suffering of low-calorie eating.

Best,
Mary Jo
