Protien and Calcium

Question
I'm 13 and kind of picky. I hate all meats except for chicken, but I don't like that really. I don't like dairy products, except yogurt. To get At least some calcium I drink orange juice with calcium added. I can't really do much with the protein, considering I don't like nuts. After a while you get sick of chicken, yogurt and orange juice. I'm mainly a salad person. I'm not a vegetarian, though. I was just wondering what I can eat or drink to replace that. My mom tells me It's a good thing I don't eat a lot of meat, But isn't sure what I can eat to replace it. Please help.

Answer
HI Jessy,

You don't get calcium from modern dairy products see http://www.notmilk.com you get it from plants, like cows get it, but you don't eat grass.

Pasteurized fruit juice is like refined sugar, and that calcium is probably useless. Just because it is there doesn't mean it is in a form your body can use.

Protein is made from amino acids, you make your own, from the amino acids in meat or from converted or brown rice with legumes, like black beans.

Try raw nuts sometime, skip roasted, except peanuts, which are not a nut but a legume. Not much protein in nuts, but nice minierals.

Whole grains and fresh produce are for you. If you eat next to no meat or fish, look into taking B12 supplement, it is hard to get w/o meat.
