Low Fat Lifestyle

Question
I am 50.I recently had a medical, and my doctor says I have the early stages of fatty liver, probably caused by a lifetime of booze, and in recent years a low carb diet in a futile attempt to lose weight.Ex. pork chops, salad and dressing but NO potato.
What dietary changes do I need to make? The though of being able to eat carbs again makes me happy!

Answer
Hi Barry,
The term "fatty liver" is also known as steatorrhoeic hepatosis or steatosis hepatis.  It is a reversible disease.  Yes, your doc is right that it could have been caused by the alcohol intake.  it can also occur in individuals who do not drink but are obese.

The treatment is to change the underlying cause.  If you are still drinking, STOP.  This is the single most effective thing you can do to reverse it.

Nutritionally, develop a balanced eating regimen of protein, carbohydrates and dietary fat at each meal.  Look into the Zone diet for more recipe ideas.  The Zone diet follows a balance of 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% dietary fat.  It is a well balanced approach to healthy eating.

I do not think that a diet that abstains from carbohydrates will benefit you in your weight loss efforts.  Placing a large amount of fat and protein in place of the carbs will not provide a balanced level of blood sugar.  I would rather see you develop an eating plan that is more of a lifestyle.

Additionally, make sure that you are drinking 60 to 90 ounces of water per day.  Exercise would also be beneficial in shedding those extra pounds.  Exercise serves to create a larger caloric deficit, which is necessary in order for your body to tap into its fat stores.

I have treated a number of men with fatty liver, and we have been able to reverse it, so there is hope.  Please let me know if I can provide more more information.

Best of health,
Dr. Bret
