DIETING - COHEN LIFESTYLE?

Question
I am 68 yo and overweight.I am 1.57 m tall and I carry 94 kg.I need for
health reasons to loose about 30 kg at least. I looked into various diets and none of them seems to get results. I do not want to get worst as I have to look after myself.I have high blood pressure under control with medicine, lower back pain, knee pain, arthritis, low energy and sleepy immediately after eating. Please advise me.I am very confused. I want an honest opinion. What can I do?

Answer
Hi Monica,

I am not familiar with the Cohen Lifestyle. I did try to research on-line but could not find enough info, also it is not available in the U.S.

Have you asked your doctor how to lose the weight?

What types of diets have you tried, for what periods, and what has your general diet looked like? I do have opinions on HBP, and arthrists...

The body is designed as an alkaline being, and therefore needs primarily alkaline fuel to sustain it's pH balance. The general rule is to consume 75-80% alkaline foods, and 20-25% acid forming foods. Your body will follow several paths to maintain the alkaline state of your blood or you would die. First, alkaline foods such as vegetables (summer squash, lettuces, cooking greens, broccoli, red bell peppers, cabbage...), and some fruits (lemon, tomato, avocado- not acid flavor, but what is the pH after metabolism of foods) offer alkalizing minerals such as organic sodium, calcium, and magnesium. If these foods are not regularly supplied then your body will begin to follow other paths such as taking calcium from your bones.

Acid forming foods unfortunately make up the bulk of most peoples diets; especially western or European cultures. These foods include all meats and grains such as white flour products, and all sugar foods. Yes, you need these foods as well but in much smaller quantities.

Excess acids are also stored in fat which is neutral.

Luckily eating more alkalizing foods also takes care of eating a low-glycemic diet, the best way to loose unwanted weight. Low-glycemic means foods that do not cause hormone responses that store fat, manufacture excess cholesterol, maintain normal metabolism, and that support the immune system and other body systems. Excess sugar which is found in baked goods, white flour products, candy, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, causes unstable blood sugar and feeds low energy states.

Include omega fatty acids sources such as salmon, almonds, walnuts, hemp oil, and supplements as well. Cook with olive oil. Cut way back on saturated fats (red meats, butter, ice cream, heavy dairy products...) and ALWAYS avoid shortening and all products containing hydrogenated oils. Omega fatty acid foods also contain vitamin E which will help your blood pressure.

Increase fiber through eating more vegetables and fruits as well as whole grains like oatmeal, millet, quinoa, pumpernickel, and 100% whole wheat.

Hope this gives you a start. Please ask if you need more assistance!

Thank you,
Dan Haley, CNC
