Question
Hello, Iam currently trying to lose some weight and need some advice. I do exercise on a regular basis, but still have about 20 lbs (give or take) I want to lose. Over the last several years I've got in the bad habit of eating when I get home at night. Usually, on a nightly basis, late, and right before I go to bed. I KNOW how bad this is losing weight, not to mention my overall health, but I still find myself doing it. So my question is, what can I do to stop this habit? Also, any other tips for losing weight? Thank you for your expert opinion, I am sure it will help. By the way, I a 25 y/o male if that makes in difference.

Answer
Eating at night isn't as bad as you think it is. The truth is that a calorie is a calorie whether it's at 8 a.m. or midnight.  Your metabolism will process it the same way as well.
If you eat 3,500 more calories than you need to sustain normal bodily needs, you will gain 1 lb.  If you burn 3,500 calories more than you need, you will lose 1 lb.

Eating at night doesn't effect health either.  Unless, of course, you have problems digesting certain foods like fats or sugars/carbs, then the indigestion might keep you awake or not feeling very well.

Lots of the info bouncing around out there is what's promoted by laypeople who may have some reliable basic info, but the more it gets told and passed around, it sort of warps.

Eating the right things may help curb any over-indulgence of the bad things we may choose later in the day.  Focusing on whole grains early in the day is more helpful than you may ever imagine. Oatmeal, Life cereal, shredded wheat (even the frosted kind) and plenty of other excellent choices are out there.  It seems unbelievable, but for reasons that would take part of a semester in med school to explain, it really does work!

Take a look here and find out more about what foods to eat - the "must" list - and as for the rest of it, the treats or the times of day you eat? That's up to you .
