gluten free diet

Question
My 12 yr old daughter was diagnosed with Celiac a few years ago. We have had a very difficult time dealing with the dietary restrictions.  She is overweight, and could certainly benefit from dieting alone, but the gluten free diet guidelines have been really tough for me. There's no simple answer, because it's really all down to a financial strain, as well as her school not having gluten free foods she can choose for lunches. The gluten free foods are extremely expensive, not to mention the stores that sell them are far away. I've looked into ordering them online but the shipping alone is $33 because it has to be shipped in dry ice. I've read all I possibly can about celiac online and joined every support group I can find online to try and get a grip on things, but it has not helped much since I cannot afford the whole "experimenting" with specialty foods to try and find things she will eat. She knows it is very difficult for me, so she will go and eat whatever there is and get sick because we can't afford much. I know I am asking for a lot, but I am hanging on to the little bit of hope I have.  Thank you for your time.

Pamela

Answer
Dear Pamela, I don't really see a question for me to answer. If it what can you do to make it easier, then I don't know that answer. I would try to call your local hospital and speak with the dietician, they might be able to help. You could re contact your physician and ask for a referral to a specialist or to a dietician. Most grocery stores will carry gluten free products if they know someone will buy them, you can ask the store manager to stock these products. There are gluten free pretzels, gluten free cereal, etc. Your 12 year old has to accept the fact that she has a condition that can't be ignored. She has to be involved in her own food choices, so educating her is the key to success. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
