12 cals per pound?

Question

I read that each pound requires 12 calories to maintain its weight. therefore at 190lbs x 12 = 2280 calories a day my body requires to maintain my weight. what this doesnt factor in is what i burn due to different activities? assuming i do absolutely nothing all day but sit in my chair and watch tv.(which wouldnt be a stretch) i must burn something! and this must affect my 2280 cals a day. can you please try to explain how your activity effects this equation? also doesnt a pound of muscle require more cals than a pound of fat? thanks. eric in nj

Answer
Hi Eric,

Calorie counting is to give one a rough idea of what is going on. Metabolism changes with moods, stresses,    muscle mass   and more.

Focus on the quality of what you eat and and the quantity will take care of itself. Folks are fat on empty food, not on real food, like fresh produce and whole grains.
