Meal timing around morning exercise

Question
I get up at 5 am and at the gym for a spin class by 5:25. Is it beneficial to eat prior to working out. I've been advised to eat some protein on my way. What do you suggest?

Answer
Hi Amy

It depends on your goals and your diet type and most critical is not protein but carbohydrate intake timing. Also, it concerns rather strength training than aerobics because though protein is needed in both exercise types this is true in the long run -- while only carbs work on the short term basis.

Generally, if you need to lose more fat, don't eat before morning exercise, if you need to build muscle, eat carb-rich food around exercise or go on carb-rotating diet like this one:

Hope it helps,
