Increased appetite and metabolism

Question
Hi Dan
I have always struggled with my weight, although I was never a big eater and am active. No other health issues at all.
Have tried low carb, low calorie, nothing worked.
At the same time,I never really had a huge appetite so I could eat 1500 calories a day(roughly my usual amount) and not be still hungry.
Recently,I cut out all fats and dairy, and started running 45 minutes a day.Cutting out the fats was tough but the running was easy.
I am finally starting to see some weight loss.
At the same time my appetite has increased. Why do you think my normally slow metabolism/appetite has increased.
Do you think cutting the fat has done this?

Answer
Hi Barry,

Running 45 minutes a day requires more calories, 1500 a day is probably not enough for you. If your appetite has increased you probably should eat more; keep to healthy choices- fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats.

If you eat too little your metabolism can decrease as well.

I do not believe in very low fat diets. You can eat as much as 30% of your diet as fat provided it is from healthy sources such as avocados, olives and olive oil, canola oil, fish oil, flax seed oil or milled flax seeds, almonds, walnuts, and hemp oil. Saturated fat should be 10% or less, and trans-fat (hydrogenated) should be 0%.

Fat is a key part of a healthy diet and will not present a problem but will in fact benefit you in many ways such as a healthy immune system, healthy nervous system, healthy skin, healthy cardiovascular system and it fills you up! Omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory as well.

Thank you for your question,

Dan Haley, CNC
