18 yr old male wt loss

Question
Hi Laura, Please help me with my son.  He use to play Lacrosse for the first three years of high school and weigh in at 180, he also wt trained and ate good.  Now in his senior year he has put on 85 lbs wt now 265. No longer doing Lacrosse because of rigorous senior schedule and pain in shins and ankles from injuries. This was check out and appears to be some extra bone growth from injuries.  Anyway he has been drinking protein shakes and trying to run on tread mill for at least ten min 3x/wk. But wt is not moving he has excessive amt of stretch marks on arms, stomach, back you name it its there. I think its the shakes that are contributing to the lack of lost. He won't listen to me, I suggested walking fast he says it won't help, my plans cutting portions in meals I cook so there are no left overs or seconds, getting him to a sports medical professional about his shins and ankles because the pain when running is keeping him from running.  What can I do for him calorie wise, what about those protein shakes current one is EAS PREMIUM PROTEIN 27G HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN.  He graduates in two three months I/He would like to lose some wt for his senior grad and prom in May. Help me to help him, please.

Answer
Hi Donna, Your son should do a total calorie count to see on average what total amount of calories he is eating in a day. Protein shakes do contain calories and should be added in the total for the day. He should try to eat under 2000 calories per day and walk at least 30 minutes every day. Ten minutes is not enough exercise to start fat burning, he needs at least 30 minutes, plus he needs to limit his calories. He should walk outside as the treadmill can be boring. Ask his doctor about Motrin, or other anti- inflammatory medications that can help heal and help with his pain control. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
