The benefits and dangers of soy

Question
There has been a lot of studies to show the numerous
benefits of taking soybeans. However, there are also
claims that taking a lot of soy may cause tumour in
the body and may make a man more feminine. To what
extent are these claims true?

Answer
Dear Liyana,

Dr Andrew Weil wrote that evidence for the health benefits of soy in  Asia is very strong, however, he said, "Japanese and other Asian peoples eat only moderate amounts of whole soy foods. They don't eat highly processed soy foods, such as fake hot dogs and ersatz hamburgers."

Israeli Health Ministry issued a health advisory recommending that soy foods be eaten only in moderation because possible benefits are far outweighed by proven risks.

The New South Wales Cancer Council warned about the dangers of high-soy diets for cancer patients, especially having hormone-dependent cancers, including breast and prostate cancer.

You can find a good summary of soy pros and cons in the article "The benefits and cautionary flags of soy"
