Why am I constipated after eating fiber?

Question
I discovered that red kidney beans contain 19 grams of fiber per cup... so now I eat one cup of kidney beans everyday... and one hamburger, or plate of sushi (10 pieces of sushi) but when I go to the washroom... no waste comes out. Is this because I'm not eating enough?

The red kidney beans are about 200 calories
The whopper is 600 calories
The Sushi is about 800 calories

Answer
Hello Xiao!

Thank you for your nutrition question. You should be eating around 25 grams of fiber daily and you are only getting 19 grams. In addition, you might not be drinking enough liquids. Liquids like water and juice add fluid to the colon and bulk to stools, making bowel movements softer and easier to pass. People who have problems with constipation should drink enough of these liquids every day, about eight 8-ounce glasses. Other liquids, like coffee and soft drinks, that contain caffeine seem to have a dehydrating effect.
