Special Diets

Question
Hi Mr. Rapitis,
I was speaking to a nutritionist very recently discussing various diets in a assistant living facility, and she was telling me that they used a special diet and I can not recall the name. She stated that this diet suited most of the residents there. Can you help me with this ?

Answer
Hello Shirley,

Could she have been referring to a "soft" diet?  This type of diet usually suits the residents because it is easier to chew. This diet contains alot of pureed foods. In a soft diet, look for foods that are easy to chew and swallow. Food can be made softer by cooking, mashing, or chopping. The also eat a more "low sodium" diet as well.We recommend a soft-food diet when someone:

May choke easily, even though their chewing and swallowing ability is adequate

Has dysphagia (trouble swallowing, or pain with swallowing)

Is transitioning from a liquid diet to a regular diet

Sample Menu

Breakfast

Orange juice
Cream of wheat
Scrambled egg
Milk
Coffee with cream and sugar
Lunch

Cream of tomato soup
Baked macaroni and cheese
Cooked asparagus tips
Applesauce
Milk
Dinner

Soft cooked chicken breast
Mashed potato
Spinach
Chocolate ice cream
Milk
