HELP!!!

Question
Hello There,

I recently have become very overwhelmed with the amount of science classes that I have to take in order to become a RD. I am mainly interested in helping people lose weight or deal with weight issues. Not so much anything else that involves nutrition. What would you reccomend as far as studying or loooking to get into this feild? any feedback would be great!

Answer
Hi, Haley

I'm sorry to hear that you are overwhelmed.  I know that can be very frustrating because you have your goal set at being an RD.

It's great that you want to help people lose weight and deal with weight issues.  I will tell you this.  Having RD behind your name makes you much more credible in an instant than someone like myself who has not gone through the classes you have.

Also, in many places, as a personal trainer, I can't give specific and detailed nutrition advice and meal plans.  If you see many of my answers I am always referring someone to a professional.  I have more limitations in that area than you would.

There are a lot of people who are RDs and certified personal trainers.  That way they get to help from both sides and provide their clients with a more complete program.

I would recommend talking over your frustrations with a professor you respect and ask for any career guidance.  You may also want to find a faculty member, or an RD in the community who also is a personal trainer and see what they think about your situation.

I already have 2 degrees and it would take a bit for me to be an RD, and it's been on my mind so that I could give people more of the help they need.

As I said, I think what you're doing is great and your end goal is awesome.  We need more like you.  Don't get discouraged by the individual classes.  Remember that they are a means to an end and only serve to make you the best RD you can be.

I hope that helps.  Let me know if you need more help.  Good luck!
