How to lose muscle bulk and keep lean muscles

Question
Hi Dr. Zilberter,

I am a 17 year old retired gymnast struggling to lose about 10 pounds.  I am 5'2 and 130 lbs, so I do need to lose this weight.  I eat very healthy with lots of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and very few sugary and processed foods.  I also exercise regularly - jogging, biking, elliptical, body weight strength exercises, etc.  This is my lifestyle - not a fad thing that I will quit once I lose the weight.  My only trouble is that I am not losing any weight!  I have large "gymnast" muscles that are bulky.  I would really like to turn this bulk into lean muscle, but I don't really know how to.  I also need to adjust my workouts or eating habits so I can lose this weight.  Can you help me??

Thank you so much!

Hannah

Answer
Hannah,

Generally, lower intensities longer duration aerobic exercises and more repetitions with lighter weight in strength training can get you "drier" muscles. Also, important thing is to limit your carbohydrate intake because deposited as glycogen in muscles, excess carbs bulk them up.

If you need more details, let me know, I'll try to work it out with you.
