im worried can you help with my weight

Question
i am 17 and my build is 6 foot 1 and i weigh 111.8 pounds, i am active and my bmi is 14.7 as checked by an online bmi check. i am not sure if this is bad, it says im underweight but i dont feel i am, ive always been slim, also i feel like i should still be loosing weight aiming for 85.8 pounds, which is what i used to weigh a few years ago, my mind sees all types of people and tells me i should loose weight to be as thin as them, but my friends all tell me i am thinner, but i cannot see that.
i see skinny people all the time and i think they still look chubby, could you tell me what it is i have or if i have any eating disorder?

also i wont go to a doctor in a clinic or hospital as i am terrified of them due to obesity and illness in my family im scared there going to tell me im fat and killing myself

please help

Answer
Hi, Chazza

I want you to listen to me very carefully.

1. You are nowhere close to being fat and no doctor with an ounce of sanity would tell you that you are obese.
2. There is something wrong and you do need to see a doctor.

With a BMI of only 14.7, you are severely underweight.  When using BMI a healthy weight starts with a BMI of at least 18.5.  That means you would need to weigh at least 136 pounds.  I know that sounds like a lot of weight, but if you continue to lose anymore, you are putting your health and life in danger.

If you are looking at skinny people and seeing them as chubby, then there is something going on with your perception of body image that demands you see a counselor.  Because if you keep thinking that way, you'll never accept your body and continue down this dangerous path.

Trust me, I've been there and I know it's not easy, but it will help you be better.

Also, just because there is obesity in your family, doesn't mean that you will be obese as well.  You can't be afraid of that.

But the reality is that you do need to see a doctor and get help.  I know you'll get help when you're ready, but keep in mind what I've said to you because there are terrible side effects to being so unnaturally thin.  You just need to be healthy for you.  It doesn't matter what other people look like because you are not them.  You can admire what they look like without wanting to look the same.

There is not enough room here to adequately share my deep concern for you, but the help is out there when you are ready for it.

The only thing I ask is that you take some time to seriously evaluate how you see your body and others.  Think about where these thoughts come from and why you might think this way about yourself and other people.

Start with that and take baby steps toward getting better, if that's what you want.

Good luck and let me know if I can help you further.
